With
these pots of a more sculptural nature I hope to explore the
symbolic and metaphoric roots of pottery language. These pots
deal with intellectual and visual content rather than utilitarianism.
I have for many years, and still do make domestic ware pottery,
but with these pots I aim to get away from our materialist habits
and values of utility. For me a pot's intrinsic function is
one of containment. In
my work I use the pot as a metaphor for the human form, the
human condition, or pot as container analogous to the human
mind as container. The pot with its universal appeal and history
becomes an object, possibly the subject within which I can explore
and communicate this exploration.
